CurvaFix IM Implant

The novel CurvaFix® IM Implant a new device for curved bones that is capable of achieving strong, stable fracture fixation.

Expanding our treatment options to remain at the forefront of advanced technology, Springfield Clinic Orthopedics now offers a new, minimally invasive (MIS) treatment for fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP), an incidence that continues to increase in parallel with the growing geriatric population. It is estimated that up to 150,000 patients suffer from a fragility fracture of the pelvis annually in the U.S.1-4

Orthopedic trauma surgeon, Matthew Gardner, MD, is treating pelvic fragility fractures with a new device called the CurvaFix® IM Implant, which was cleared for use by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019. The CurvaFix is the first implant specifically designed for use in the curved bones of the pelvis. Through a minimally invasive procedure, the curved implant is steered through the boney pathways of the pelvis, allowing the use of a more robust implant that fills the space within the bone to create a strong, stable construct. This implant has the potential to overcome the limitations of existing surgical modalities while significantly improving patient recovery.

There has already been a broad range of surgical procedures successfully completed using the CurvaFix Implant, demonstrating its utility in many types of pelvic fractures. These procedures include complex fractures due to high-energy trauma, fragility fractures in the elderly, pathological fractures in oncology patients, revision for failed pelvic fixation, and fracture fixation in the presence of existing spinal and/or hip hardware that pose procedural challenges. The early clinical experience has also demonstrated procedure utility, fracture stability, pain relief, early weight bearing, and a return of patients to mobility.

Ream and Run Shoulder Arthroplasty

Middle-aged man outside holding his shoulder in pain.

The “ream and run” is the common name for a non-prosthetic glenoid arthroplasty. In a standard shoulder arthroplasty, the humeral head (ball) and the socket in which it rotates are both replaced. The humeral head will be replaced with a metal ball and the socket with a polyplastic piece.  The major problem is that rubbing metal-on-plastic will eventually rub down the poly and result in the same problem that you had initially.  The “ream and run” is ideal because it replaces the worn-out humeral head with a metal ball and then patient’s own socket is reamed down and holes are drilled which cause natural cartilage to reform. The result gives mobility back to our active patients who might not be candidates for a standard arthroplasty.

This procedure is performed by David Tapscott, MD.

Imaging

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

Because your convenience and comfort are our number one priority, state-of-the-art digital imaging equipment is available on-site in ALL of our offices. Doctors will have the highest quality diagnostic images available to determine your most appropriate treatment plan.

DIAGNOSTICS

Our orthopedic specialists use a number of imaging techniques, including bone densitometry (DXA) scans, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diagnostic and fluoroscopic radiography (X-rays). The majority of these imaging techniques are digital. Workstations allow the interpreting physician the ability to manipulate the images and provide a better diagnosis by magnifying areas of interest.

DIGITAL RECORDS

Digitally acquired images and reports are electronically stored and can be viewed any time by a provider within the Springfield Clinic network. Digital images can also be sent electronically to both hospitals in Springfield. Your records can also be burned to CDs or printed on film. When exams are ordered by a Springfield Clinic provider, results are sent to the patient’s electronic health record. Images are sent by mail to providers who are not members of Springfield Clinic.
