Physical Therapy

Springfield Clinic's physical therapists see patients in consultation and upon referral by licensed physicians. Our staff is widely versed in the treatment of many common physical therapy disorders, as well as many specialized areas not seen in most clinics. We have a team of experienced and versatile therapists who are dedicated to providing the individual attention you expect from the Springfield Clinic health care team. We care about patients and work together toward a successful and healthy outcome.

Physical therapy is concerned with identifying and maximizing your quality of life and movement potential within the physical, psychological, emotional and social well being. Physical therapy is performed by either a physical therapist (PT) or an assistant (PTA) acting under the direction of the PT.

Physical Therapy Services

ASTYM

The ASTYM process stimulates the body to regenerate and remodel tissues. Our ASTYM-certified therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation, and then follow specific treatment parameters to initiate a regenerative process that encourages the resorption of scar tissue and the regeneration of damaged soft tissues. Visit the ASTYM website to learn more.

Balance and Falls

The goal with therapy is to improve the patient’s stability, center of gravity awareness and limits of stability to reduce incidences of falling and loss of balance. Our department utilizes several approaches including the Smart Balance Master, Swiss Balls and functional activities.

Custom Shoe Orthotics

Evaluation of the foot and ankle for custom rigid orthotics to improve symptoms and biomechanics of the lower extremity.

Dry Needling

The treatment of many musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions. It is not appropriate for all conditions or pathologies, and the use of the technique will be at the discretion of your physical therapist.

Dry needling is a manual therapy technique within the scope of physical therapy to reduce pain. It is based on neuro anatomy and modern scientific study of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. A very fine filament needle is inserted through the skin and into the deeper tissues that are considered trigger points to your pain.

McConnell and Kinesio Taping

Physical Therapy utilizes these taping techniques to improve biomechanics of a joint to facilitate progression strengthening. Taping is also used in conjunction with therapy to inhibit muscle spasms which may be contributing to pain.

Orthopedic Conditions

We treat a wide range of orthopedic conditions, including plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow and impingement syndrome. The focus of therapy is to improve the patient’s biomechanics to reduce overuse injury with goal of return to prior level of function. Our department utilizes manual therapy skills to reduce myofascial tension, therapeutic exercise to restore musculoskeletal symmetry, and the use of modalities to reduce pain and inflammation.

Pelvic Floor Therapy

Physical therapy can help with various modalities such as ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation and biofeedback. Our specially trained therapists use exercise to strengthen weak muscles as well as teach overly tight muscles to completely relax. Manual techniques are used to restore balance to the muscles and joints of the pelvis, lumbar spine and hips.

Most importantly, our physical therapists educate the patient how to manage their problem and return to daily activities.

Pre- and Post-Natal

The goal of therapy is to improve postural awareness and lumbar stabilization with appropriate progression of a home program specifically designed for the pre or post natal patient.

Pre- and Post-Surgical

Our Physical Therapy department encourages a patient to be seen prior to surgery to provide gait training using crutches, cane or walker. Physical Therapists are specially trained to progress range of motion and strength to restore you back to your prior level of function throughout your entire rehab program. Your therapist provides regular progress reports to your physician to improve patient outcomes and communication.

Vestibular Program

Vestibular rehabilitation helps patients address their decrease in balance and stability by improving postural control, center of gravity and limits of stability combined with sensory integration. In addition the therapist is able to assess the need for canal repositioning techniques which may include the Epley maneuver to help resolve vertigo.

Occupational Therapy

Hand Therapy

Your condition, whether caused by trauma, surgery, degenerative processes or an accumulative strain, requires specialized attention for care and rehabilitative support in order to achieve the best functional outcomes for upper extremity and hand injuries.

Our hand therapy services are provided by experienced, registered occupational therapists that have obtained specialized knowledge of the upper extremity through advanced training, continuing education courses, and independent study. Our staff offers customized therapeutic programs designed for fast, safe progression to wellness through a comprehensive approach.

The certified hand therapists at Springfield Clinic are determined to ensure patients regain as much function as possible in their hands, elbows and wrists. The first step to getting back to regular activities is an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. From conservative treatment to post-operative rehabilitation and everything in between, our three hand therapists work closely with your physician to help you move past your injury and back to daily life.

Our hand therapists provide treatment for a wide array of injuries.

  • Chronic injuries

  • Surgical recovery

  • Fractures

  • Amputations

  • Wounds

Patients can schedule an appointment with one of our therapists at any time. Other central Illinois health care providers may also refer patients to our specialists.

ROM/Strengthening following Mastectomy

Patient education and instruction in lymphedema, range of motion (ROM) and postural exercises including soft tissue mobilization to improve shoulder biomechanics and postural awareness following a mastectomy.

Neurological Therapy Care

Rehabilitation helps stroke survivors relearn lost skills like walking, moving, talking, swallowing, and other activities of daily life. Rehabilitation also teaches survivors other ways of completing tasks to compensate for any areas of challenge.

Rehabilitation for stroke survivors may include physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or speech therapy depending on areas of need.

Lee Silverman’s Voice Therapy (LSVT LOUD) is available for the management of the speech symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease. LSVT is considered the gold standard treatment based on clinical research.
