Springfield Clinic’s Neurology team is excited to welcome a new physician this month.

“Becoming a doctor is a path,” says Maureen O'Marro, DO, “and many things drive you to that path.” For Dr. O’Marro, one of those things was her family. Her mother is a nurse and her father, Springfield Clinic Infectious Diseases & Travel Medicine specialist Steven O’Marro, MD, FACP, is a physician, so medicine felt like a way of life even before Dr. O’Marro chose that path. “Thanks to my parents, I saw that medicine was the service of caring for other people, and I wanted to contribute to that service,” she says.

Dr. O’Marro received her medical degree from the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her neurology residency at the Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Bloomington, Ill. She thought originally that she would go into psychiatry or psychology because she had a lot of interest in the mind. But throughout medical school, she began to realize her interest lay more in disorders of the mind and chose to specialize in neurology. “The best part of my day is getting to engage with my patients and learn more about them as I’m taking care of them,” she says about being a neurologist. “I love genuine social interaction with my patients.”

Board certified in neurology, Dr. O’Marro will provide comprehensive general neurological care, with special interest in movement disorders, neuromuscular disorders and infectious diseases as they relate to neurology (neuroimmunology). When she’s not working, she gives back to the community by volunteering outreach care in underserved areas and promoting educational opportunities for women.
